The Geohash

And now for something a little different - yesterday I partook in a "geohash". Simply put, it generates a random location to meet up with other strangers (who, most likely, also follow the comic). Yesterday wasn't too long a drive for me so I went along to find a few other people also show up - we had a little bit of a chat then disbanded (but only after my friend accidentally set my car alarm off). Now for the comic to explain it:
There's a wiki to explain a bit more of the details as well as locate local groups along with an interactive map but don't go along expecting people other than people working or studying in the fields of math/science/engineering or other geek or nerd-like activities :p
I'm also just posting to let people know I'm still around - currently Uni is a bit of a pain with assignments and reports due but I'm sure I'll get through them one day at a time. It's already less than 3 weeks until swotvac starts which means exams aren't too far away. I've only got two this year, but there are also two "tests" the week before that which could prove difficult.

Pretty strange title, but the front-door puzzle in T7G is working, both logically and graphically!
T7G spider puzzle in action
Probably not what I should be doing with uni et al, but I'm happy to finally get what should have been trivial done :D
Not really looking forward to the cake puzzle just yet though (and before anyone asks - no release time yet although you're more than welcome to obtain a copy of the code).

I must say Akismet rules, however I've been getting a little bit of blog spam recently (10 per day every few days - up to about 160 in total now and they seem to like 7th Guest). And I'm sick of clearing the queue. So it's time for me to take some action.
I don't feel the need just yet (or the inclination with uni and other more pressing matters) to implement any form of CAPTCHA (of any sort, be it math, image or "english" based) so I've now blocked ALL spam comments that Akismet picks up such that they get immediately binned. No moderation. No spam queues. Nothing. So if anyone trips the spam filter, you'll need to try again with a less "spammy" comment.
Hopefully it doesn't start trying to block all comments :p
Puzzles work. Sort of.

And only some puzzles too. Dining room still shows problems.
Return of the Aztecs - Arabia 2008

The Arabia 2008 AI tournament (for Age of Empires II) has now come and gone again with perhaps the largest number of entries for quite some time :) I abandoned my Teuton script, opting to start from fresh with the Mayans. Although the main tourney has been finished for a few weeks now, an unofficial round-robin play-off has been going for the top 5 scripts - all of which finished within a few points of each other.
In the primary tournament, I finished equal 14th with one other scripter which was a little lower than I had hoped however I was a little hard done by with the draw by facing 3 primarily flushing AI's which is one area where my script was still a little weak, however I won the other 2 rounds (albeit against newer scripters than myself). One or two of the games that I lost were fairly close though whereby I eventually lost since I wasn't able to train units fast enough. At the end of the day I at least now know the weaknesses I need to work on between now and the end of the year.
As for the tourney winners, VNS_Caesar (Aztec) won the play-off so congrats to VNS_Caesar as well as all the other scripters for joining :)
