Just don't jump to conclusions - it's only a single JPEG from the trailer.

Oh, and Google released the beta for their "Chrome" web-browser as well today.

Meh.

Saturday Mahem

Who puts exams on a Saturday?! It's thrown my internal calendar into a bit of disarray though - I keep thinking it's "yesterday". Having to do last minute revision on Friday night meant I thought it was Thursday (to the point I was confused as to why there was a Footy game being played). Similarly, Saturday night really felt like a Friday night. Oh well - I might get back in sync eventually.

Just to mess with my day further, the power was out when I got back from my exam (which at least gave an excuse to have Subway for tea) but once the power was restored we still had no Internet connection! *sigh* Fortunately things got restored early this-afternoon so crisis averted and I could check up on the forums I visit, get back on to MSN and IRC and so on. The spammers even managed to sneak a garbage message through Akismet during this time (they still seem to like this 7th Guest post) but a click of the "Mark Spam" button won't fix.

Only one exam left to go!

The Geohash

And now for something a little different - yesterday I partook in a "geohash". Simply put, it generates a random location to meet up with other strangers (who, most likely, also follow the comic). Yesterday wasn't too long a drive for me so I went along to find a few other people also show up - we had a little bit of a chat then disbanded (but only after my friend accidentally set my car alarm off). Now for the comic to explain it:

There's a wiki to explain a bit more of the details as well as locate local groups along with an interactive map but don't go along expecting people other than people working or studying in the fields of math/science/engineering or other geek or nerd-like activities :p

I'm also just posting to let people know I'm still around - currently Uni is a bit of a pain with assignments and reports due but I'm sure I'll get through them one day at a time. It's already less than 3 weeks until swotvac starts which means exams aren't too far away. I've only got two this year, but there are also two "tests" the week before that which could prove difficult.

Online Again

As some may have noticed, this site was unavailable for a portion of the weekend. From what I've found out, a problem with the file-system on the server I'm hosted on was corrupted. While this took the better part of the weekend to fix, I'm impressed as this is the first time I've noticed any downtime since signing up in June last year :)

In a second sense, I've also just gotten my internet connection up at my uni accommodation after driving down yesterday morning (first time in metro areas with a manual). It was rather annoying yesterday afternoon not being able to check emails or anything. My room is still a complete mess with empty and part-empty bags still lying everywhere and assorted junk covering all the other surfaces.

Suppose I should do something about that now...

RSS feeds

I have a feed... Two in fact. Put simply, pages like Bloglines, Google Reader, etc can now subscribe to this page.

I spent most of last night (6pm till 1am although half of this was fixing fixing various bugs for other parts of the site) and today (10 till 3) working on getting two feeds together. The easy one was the RSS feed (edit 26 Oct: now removed as Atom is more flexible). I got that completed just after midnight and spent a little while just fine-tuning it.

The slightly more interesting one was the Atom feed. I had quite some trouble getting this one to behave with Firefox trying everything from downloading it to attempting to display as a webpage to simply showing the document structure. It was only after uploading to one of my test servers and running it through the Feed Validator that I noticed I had spelt the namespace wrongly.

Feeds are currently generated nightly so the atom feed linked above won't be present until sometime overnight. Similarly, any posts I make during the day won't hit the feeds for several hours. If there is demand, I might increase how often the feed is updated.

Links to the feeds are available on the bottom of each blog page, in the address bar for Firefox or the (hopefully) now orange feed icon next to the home icon in IE7.

As I was thinking previously, I've also moved the blog to the "front" of the website. Unfortunately there were a few minor problems but work-arounds were hacked together.

On a different note, I need to head across to the other side of the city for the second (and final) practical on Monday.

Edit @ 6:30pm - I suppose now I need to really consider a proper title to these pages rather than just "Blog" so the title on feed is actually relevant ;)
