Closing in on a month from the last blog post and I still can't think of anything worthwhile to write, especially if you exclude the boring day-to-day stuff. Guess I'll just have to go on that anyway.

Uni-related, things were fairly busy starting around 3 weeks ago up until last weekend. Ultimately, the steady stream of work meant things got left to the last minute. This, in turn, meant items due later in the week didn't get started until later in the week. Such a vicious circle, but we got there in the end. Two of my subjects had mid-semester and end-of-semester tests which didn't go too badly, so I've only got 2 exams this year, albeit one on a Saturday afternoon.

Currently I'm at home for swotvac and plan to head down to the lake at some point to check out the water levels - I've heard they haven't dropped too much now that the cooler weather is here, but it'll still be good to check it out first hand. Also this week, I had my room rearranged on me. On the plus side, the new layout is pretty good, and my room's now fairly clean (although that's probably because the hallway is still half filled with bits and pieces).

As for the T7G project I'm working on, not much has happened here either. Both Spookypeanut and myself haven't done a lot although jvprat has been slowing working on implementing a few things to the ScummVM plugin including initial music support and preliminary support for the other Groovie games. One of the first things I plan to do when I get the chance to fiddle with the C# implementation to move from multi-threading back to single-threading as it eliminates some of the occasional read/write access hazards I've been experiencing.

Finally, to wrap up this post I've also just finished reformatting my server with a clean install of Ubuntu 8.04 which is now happily sitting out connected to the TV again :)

The Geohash

And now for something a little different - yesterday I partook in a "geohash". Simply put, it generates a random location to meet up with other strangers (who, most likely, also follow the comic). Yesterday wasn't too long a drive for me so I went along to find a few other people also show up - we had a little bit of a chat then disbanded (but only after my friend accidentally set my car alarm off). Now for the comic to explain it:

There's a wiki to explain a bit more of the details as well as locate local groups along with an interactive map but don't go along expecting people other than people working or studying in the fields of math/science/engineering or other geek or nerd-like activities :p

I'm also just posting to let people know I'm still around - currently Uni is a bit of a pain with assignments and reports due but I'm sure I'll get through them one day at a time. It's already less than 3 weeks until swotvac starts which means exams aren't too far away. I've only got two this year, but there are also two "tests" the week before that which could prove difficult.

Last weekend I commented that with Easter gone again for another year, the hot cross buns would be gone as well.

Except it seems that is not the case just yet.

Yes, that does say baked 29th March (ie, today), and yes, I do prefer fruitless :p

Taking the Heat

How the weather can change in a few short days. At the start of this month, we experienced the longest stretch of days over 35 degrees in record, closely followed by what I think was the longest stretch of any Australian capital city. Not fun considering I don't have access to any air conditioning in my room here.

But how things can change. The maximum temp has now dropped to around 22 degrees which is around what the overnight low was barely a week ago.

Home for Easter

Easter Thursday traffic (particularly around 5pm) is a complete pain. Seriously.

After finishing my lab early and rushing back to my accommodation, I managed to drive out of the car park around 4:20pm. It then took me close to half an hour for what is normally a ten minute drive to reach one of my friends houses to pick them up. From there, we battled our way across to the other side of the city for our tea break arriving at 6:45pm. We left there at 7:15pm and settled down to sit behind a truck for the several hour drive. One RBT later (a "Random Breath Test" - my first one! They were pulling off groups of 10 or so cars at a time), we arrived home around 9:20pm meaning a travel time close to 4.5 hours.

The weekend itself was quite good. I spent most of Saturday and all of Sunday down the Yacht Club and got adequately sunburnt on the Saturday afternoon out in the rescue boat. Seems to be a habit of mine getting burnt at sailing events. Unfortunately there wasn't a lot of wind but all the "races" got in with lasagne and apple crumble for tea on the Sunday night. All in all, I think the majority of those sailing enjoyed the weekend, both on and off water.

At home on the Sunday, rumours that someone had left one of the doors open spread with no chocolate eggs located outside this year, but rather, spread throughout the lounge and dining rooms with some around the hallway and bathroom as well. The other alternative here is that the Easter Bunny found the cat-flap this year.

I also took the time for a trip around the lake to see the effects lack of water. While not a lot had changed from last time, there was a 10 or 15cm drop which was noticeable around the tree stumps. Part way around the lake provided some quite appealing photo opportunities as well (photos at end of post).

Eventually the weekend had to come to a close so my friends were dropped off at our place and we left around 12:45pm. The drive back wasn't nearly as hectic as the one up was with myself opting to just sit out the slower cars until an overtaking lane (leaving adequate room in front of me), but even still, we saw some rather risky overtaking manoeuvres performed by other cars. Upon reaching the city again, things didn't slow down very much with a fairly clear run through and after dropping my friends back off, I arrived back around 4:10pm. Around an hour less than in reverse direction a few days earlier.

Of course, the only issue I can see now is a lack of hot cross buns for another 11 months...

And now for the other lake photos. Full view here and here.

Did other people get up to much?
